Executive Secretary's Message

 My dear Friends,

As the Executive Secretary of the CCBI Commission for VSCR, it is my joy to share the recent activities of the  Commission. All the activities were successfully done because of the cooperation and support of the Chairman,  member-Bishops, Exco Members, and Regional and Diocesan Secretaries who always encourage and guide  me.

Last year we have had a very fruitful XIV National Conference in Goa wherein we took some practical action plans which we were able to implement in our respective regions and dioceses, especially taking Pope Francis’ Encyclical, Laudato Si forward. Of course, there is always scope for further improvement that can be done with the help our collaborators.

Our CDPI website is being updated periodically. But due to some reasons, it was not done as we had planned, and to offset the hurdles, we have chalked out a few viable methods to keep our website active and time-lined. We hope, henceforth, this Website will be updated regularly and the news items are also made relevant and informative. Please send the report of the activities of the CDPI done both at the regional and the diocesan level, and/or any other article that would interest our priests-fraternity.

The Executive Secretary visited the Regions and participated in their Regional and Diocesan Meetings. In a few dioceses, Orientation and On-going Formation Courses were conducted for Priests.

I would like to share the reflection given by Pope Francis when he celebrated Mass in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta on 9th December, 2016. His Holiness said that priests are called to serve as authentic mediators of God’s love, rather than as intermediaries – “go-betweens” or “middle-men” – concerned only with advancing their own interests. No to “go-between” priests, yes to priests who are mediators of God’s love. The role of the mediator is not that of the intermediary – and priests are called to be the former for their flock:

“The mediator gives himself (lit. perde se stesso) to unite the parties, he gives his life. That is the price: his life – he pays with his life, his fatigue, his work, so many things, but – in this case the pastor - to unite the flock, to unite people, to bring them to Jesus. The logic of Jesus as mediator is the logic of annihilating oneself. St. Paul in his Letter to the Philippians is clear on this: ‘He annihilated himself, emptied himself, and to achieve this union, [he did so] even unto death, death on a cross. That is the logic: to empty oneself, to annihilate oneself.”

Let us not forget that the priest who abandons the task of being a mediator and instead prefers to be an intermediary is unhappy, and soon becomes sad – and he will seek happiness in vaunting himself and making his “authority” felt.

Well, Dear Brothers, all of us are excited to participate in the forthcoming XIV National Conference to be held from 15th afternoon -17th evening March, 2017 at Seva Kendra, 52B, Radhanath Chowdhury Road Kolkata-700 015, on the Theme: Life and Mission of St. Teresa of Calcutta Reflected In The Life And Mission of Diocesan Priests. A lot of planning and preparation has been made to make this National Council a great success.  We pray that our dear St. Mother Teresa guides us in all our deliberations and make us priests after the Hearts of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary. May our Patron, St. John Mary Vianney, continue to pray for us and help us follow his exemplary priestly life.

Rev. Fr. Raymond Joseph
